Azerbaijan intends to increase energy efficiency by 20 percent till 2020, Director of the Institute for Scientific Research on Economic Reforms (ISRER) under the Ministry of Economy of the country Vilayat Veliyev said.

He made the remarks Nov. 17 during the Azerbaijan Infrastructure, Power and Renewable Energy Investment Conference in Baku.

He said that these objectives were described in “Azerbaijan 2020: Look into the Future” concept of development adopted by the country’s president.

“In particular, it is planned to reduce the volumes of gas emissions from boilers by 20 percent, bring the share of renewable energy in total production to 20 percent and increase the energy efficiency by 20 percent as part of the concept,” said Veliyev.

He noted that it is necessary to carry out a number of conditions to achieve these objectives.

“There is a need to improve the legal framework, and the work in this direction is already underway,” Veliyev added. “It’s also necessary to strengthen the institutional framework, create a controlled environment, and the proposals for the creation of a regulator have already been submitted to the government of Azerbaijan.”

“It is also necessary to decide on investment plans in this area, as well as to approve the tariff and pricing policy based on separate adequate rates,” Veliyev said.
