BP drills first well within Shah Deniz Stage 2

BP completed the drilling of the first well in the Shah Deniz Stage 2 in the last quarter of 2016, reads a report of BP’s activity in Azerbaijan in 2016.

BP Azerbaijan is the operator of the Shah Deniz field’s development.

Modernization of the floating semi-submersible drilling rig Istiglal was competed in September 2016. The rig finished drilling the SDC04 well, which is the first well drilled as part of the Shah Deniz Stage 2 project, in the last quarter of 2016.

In 2016, the SDA09 well was drilled and commissioned from the Shah Deniz Alpha platform and also deep drilling of the SDA10 well was started.

Drilling operations will continue to reach a stable production level.

The report says the Shah Deniz Stage 2 project is completed by 89 percent.

Reserves of the Shah Deniz field are estimated at 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas. Shah Deniz Stage 2 will add a further 16 billion cubic meters per year of gas production to the approximately 9 billion cubic meters per year produced by Shah Deniz Stage 1.

The gas will be exported to Turkey and European markets through expansion of the South Caucasus Pipeline and the construction of the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.

A contract for development of the Shah Deniz offshore field was signed on June 4, 1996.
