Turkey’s state gas distribution and supply company Botas has unveiled new forecast figures concerning the country’s gas needs: the overall demand is set to rise 72 per cent to 43.185 billion cubic meters per year of gas by 2020. For the current year, Turkey is expected to consume 25.1 billion cubic meters of gas.
Meanwhile, Azerbaijan likely will export 6.6 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey, from 2010 through 2020. The turnout, however, will meet only 15 per cent of Turkey’s annual gas demand.

According to Botas estimates, Russia will retain its status of the biggest gas supplier to Turkey вЂ" a total of 24 billion cubic meters of Russian gas exports will flow to Turkey in 2020. Iran is expected to become the second major source of supply, with the estimated sales of 9.555 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey.

Meanwhile, Botas said that beginning from 2007, the rates of imports of Russian and Iran gas will be flat. Azerbaijan вЂ" according to Botas estimates вЂ" will supply 2 billion cubic meters of gas to the Turkish market in 2007.

Turkey also is actively striving for the status of a major gas transit country. This week Botas and its European and Russian partners вЂ" Bulgargaz, Transgaz, MOL and OMV вЂ" managed to clinch an agreement of the establishment of a joint venture to construct and operate a gas-main running from Turkey to Austria. Each partner has secured a 20 per cent participating interest in the 3,400-km pipeline, to work out to 4.6 billion euros. The pipeline likely will be commissioned in 2011 and run at an initial throughput capacity of 13 billion cubic meters per year of gas, with possible expansion up to 31 billion cubic meters by 2020. Turkey expects to use the pipeline to supply European nations with gas from Azerbaijan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Syria and Turkmenistan.
