The Baku International Sea Trade Port shipped 365,000 tons of dry cargo and container in January-May, which is 2.5 times more than the same period of 2009, a source in the port reported.
According to the source, the growth is due to increasing cement clinker imports from Iran. The port also shipped 3,600 units of containers with humanitarian supplies to be sent Europe to Afghanistan via Kazakhstan (Aktau).
The transportation of humanitarian goods across the Black Sea, Georgia and Azerbaijan, and across the Caspian Sea to Central Asia, has been underway since March 2009.
The rest of the transshipped cargo fell to other types of cargo.
In addition, the port shipped more than one million tons of cargo ferry (loaded wagons) in January-May compared to 845,000 tons in January-April.
In 2009 the Baku port transported 2.5 million tons of oil cargo or 10 percent less than in 2008. In 2009 the port transported 5.1 million tons of cargo.
Ten percent increase is observed in the transportation of cargo ferry. The volume of traffic in this segment amounted to 2.3 million tons. The port doubled dry cargo transportation to 300,000 tons in 2009 compared to 2008.
Earlier the source said, in 2008 the Baku port transshipped about 6 million tons of various cargoes. Of the total volume of transshipped cargo in 2008, about 3 million tons accounted for petroleum and petroleum products, and the remaining 3 million tons accounted for freight on following ferries (Baku-Turmenbashi, Turkmenbashi-Baku, Baku-Aktau and Aktau-Baku).
