GM Uzbekistan car sales drop 35 per cent in Russia in January-September

GM Uzbekistan JV, formerly UzDaewooAuto in Asaka, in the Andijan region, decreased its car sales in January-September 2013 in Russia which is the main export market for the automobile by 35 per cent to 43,093 units compared to the same period of 2012, the Automobile Manufacturers Committee of the European Business Association said.

Some 23,010Nexia cars were sold in the first nine months of this year on the Russian market, a drop of 43 per cent and 20,083 Matiz mini cars also dropped by 22 per cent.

In September, the company decreased car sales by seven per cent to 6508, including Nexia sales decreasing by 42 per cent to 2532 compared to September 2012, while Matiz sales increased 1.5 times to 3,976 units.

As reported, in 2012, the company lowered car sales in Russia by five per cent to 88,232 units compared to 2011.

UzDaewooAuto JSC was created in 1996 on a parity basis by the Government of Uzbekistan and South Korea's Daewoo Motor Company.

In 2005 Uzbekistan bought Daewoo shares in a joint venture. In 2007 Uzavtoprom and General Motors signed an agreement to establish a basis for the GM Uzbekistan plant with an authorised capital of $266.7 million. The American side owns 25 per cent of the shares plus one share in the enterprise with the possibility of increasing it to 40 per cent. Currently, 75 per cent of the shares belong to Uzavtoprom.

Currently, GM Uzbekistan JV produces eight models of cars including four Chevrolet - Captiva, Epica, Spark and Malibu, production of which began in February this year based on SKD technology. Other models are available within its full scale production.

In 2012, GM Uzbekistan JV increased car production by 6.4 per cent compared to 2011 which was up to 235,518 units.
