Turkey to announce tender for construction of floating hospital

Turkey is to announce a tender for the construction of a floating hospital, the country's health minister Mehmet Muazzinoglu said, Sabah newspaper reported on Jan.10.

The reason for establishing such a hospital ship is due to seismic activity in Turkey, the minister said.

The minister also stressed that the hospital ship will operate around the clock.

"It is expected that one floating hospital will have 206 wards, 10 mini-clinics and eight operating rooms, as well as two helipads," the minister said.

Muazzinoglu added that the length of the hull of the floating hospital will be 200 metres.

The minister went on to say that the project to establish a floating hospital will cost $100 million. It is expected that the tender for its construction will be announced in Turkey in the second quarter of 2014.
