Poti port employees protest against monopolization in receipt of cargoes

Tbilisi, Georgia, April 4

By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

About 1,500 employees of Georgian Poti city port's terminals moved their protest from the port to the city hall demanding a solution to their problems.

The port employees are protesting against the agreement, drawn up in 2011, that starting from May 1 this year all goods in the Poti port will be received by one company, APM Terminals. As a result about 7,000 employees of other nine terminals will become unemployed. They have already been notified that they were dismissed on April 1.

The terminal workers seek help from parliamentary majority MP Eka Beselia and Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.

The protest was also joined by local representatives of Georgian Trade Union Confederation. The workers were visited by Poti mayor, chairman of the city council and deputy economy minister of Georgia.
