Turkmenistan and Tajikistan considered the aspects of cooperation in the transport sector in the context of implementing the memorandum of understanding on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan (TAT) railway construction at the intergovernmental level, the Turkmen government said on April 16.

Tajik Foreign Minister Sirodzhiddin Aslov was in Ashgabat and held talks at the Turkmen foreign ministry.

"The delegations of the two countries discussed the issues of expanding cooperation in the trade and economic sphere. Particularly promising are areas of bilateral cooperation in the transport sector in the context of implementing the memorandum of understanding on the TAT railway construction project," the report says.

Political consultations were held.

The TAT project, implemented since early June 2013, is important for strategic, political and economic interests of all project participants. China, Iran and Kyrgyzstan are expected to join it in the future.

Previously, the Turkmen side reported that a 400 kilometer TAT will be commissioned in 2015. Moreover, Turkmen railway men will lay the Afghan section of the railway.

This route will open a new corridor between Central Asia and the world markets through the sea ports near the Indian Ocean.
