Turkey has ceased exploiting the mines in Manisa province, which were closed after one of them exploded, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz was quoted on May 23 by the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet as saying.

"Mine closure in Soma city will adversely affect the country's economy," he said.

Some 301 people were killed and 486 people were injured as a result of the mine explosion in the city of Soma in the Turkish province of Manisa.

It was earlier reported that the Turkish government is working on a new bill on mining legislation.

The new bill will soon be submitted to the country's parliament, though no details about the new legislation have appeared.

The Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Ministry and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security started working on a bill following the mine tragedy in Manisa province.
In total, there are 740 coal mines and 48,706 miners in Turkey.

Over 3,000 people have been killed and over 100,000 were injured since 1941 to the present day in mining accidents in Turkey.

In fact, mine accidents account for 10.4% of work-related injuries in Turkey.

In the first four months of 2014, some 1,235 people were killed as a result of work-related accidents in Turkey, 103 of them females.

The previous worst mine accident in Turkey's history occurred in the province of Zonguldak in 1992, killing 263 workers.

Turkish police detained 25 people in connection with the mine accident in Soma.
Protests have been recently held in Istanbul in connection with the mine tragedy in Soma.
