Uzbekistan and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will develop cooperation aimed at developing the agricultural potential of the country, according to the statement made at a meeting of Uzbek President Islam Karimov and FAO head Jose Graziano da Silva, the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan (UzA) reported.

The Uzbek president has recently received FAO Director-General in his Oksaroy residence, according to the report.

It was stressed that opening of a FAO representative office in Tashkent will contribute to further cooperation.

"Uzbekistan considers FAO as a key world-class organization in international policy and measures related to food security and agricultural development," president Karimov added.

Uzbekistan has joined FAO since 2001. The country has implemented eight national and regional projects. Currently, five more national and regional projects are being implemented.

Together with FAO Uzbekistan trains specialists and introduces the modern technologies for water conservation and water management. The advanced methods of cultivation, breeding and seed production are being introduced.

The Uzbek president and FAO head exchanged the views on food security, agricultural development, introduction of new drought-resistant varieties of food crops and modern forms and methods of farming, according to the report.

FAO head attended the international conference on "The most important provisions of food program implementation in Uzbekistan". He expressed confidence that the forum will become an important platform for solving urgent problems of humanity, such as food security and agricultural development.

In his speech at the conference, Silva stressed that Uzbekistan has achieved great progress in the areas of agriculture, food security, presence in regional and international markets. He added that the country has the potential to do more in these areas.

"The increase in food production in Uzbekistan, especially fruits and vegetables, can help to ensure food security in other countries," he said.

FAO head reiterated the readiness of his organization to the further development and expansion of relations with Uzbekistan.

He recalled that the Committee on World Food Security adopted voluntary guidelines on responsible governance of land and property. It is currently discussing the principles of agricultural investments.

FAO is ready to assist Uzbekistan in overcoming these challenges as far as the country is moving forward and working as part of the amended strategic framework approved by the member-states, including Uzbekistan.

As part of his visit to Uzbekistan, FAO head held talks with Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyayev and Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov and discussed the cooperation issues.
