A system for scanning of freight trains was launched in Turkey, the Turkish TRT Haber TV channel reported.

The said system was launched first in the province of Van, on the border with Iran.

The scanning system has been operating in a test mode for nearly a year.

Earlier, Turkish Customs and Trade Minister Hayati Yazici said that the cost of the new scanning system is about three billion euros and the new scanning system can also detect radioactive elements.

It is expected to create a scanning system for trucks and modernization of a number of customs checkpoints in Turkey through the end of the year.
Some eight customs checkpoints have been modernized in Turkey in 2013, costing 265.2 million Turkish liras.

Turkey plans to upgrade five more checkpoints this year.

There are 22 customs checkpoints in Turkey, according to official stats.

The official exchange rate on June 6 is 2.1088 TL / USD.
