Azerbaijan’s transport sector increases cargo and passenger transportation

Around 107.9 million tonnes of cargo was transported by Azerbaijan's transport sector in the first half of 2014, which is 1.8 percent more than in the same period of 2014, the country's State Statistical Committee said in its report.

The volume of non-oil cargo has increased by 3.6 percent in January-June, and stood at 76.3 million tonnes, according to the committee.

The private sector accounted for 76.3 percent of the total volume of cargo transported in January-June.

Some 57.1 percent of the total volume of cargo was transported by vehicles, 29 percent - pipelines, 9.4 percent - rail and 4.5 percent - waterway.

Azerbaijan's transport sector has transported about 218 million tonnes of cargo in 2013, which is 3.4 percent more than in 2012.

Around 867.6 million people were transported by passenger vehicles in January-June, which is 5.8 percent more than in the same period of 2013. Most passengers were transported by vehicles (87.3 percent) and metro (12.5 percent).

Some 10.1 million tonnes of cargo was transported by railway in January - June, versus 11.2 million tonnes in the same period of 2013.

Some 4.9 million tonnes of cargo was transported by waterway in January-June, compared to six million tonnes in the same period of 2013. The entire volume of transported cargo fell to international operations. The volume of cargo handled at Azerbaijani ports in January-June amounted to 6.1 million tonnes.

Some 61.5 million tonnes of cargo was transported by vehicles, which is 3.1 percent more than in January-June 2013. The volume of passenger transportation stood at 757.3 million people ( 6.1 percent growth). Some 96.3 percent of passengers were transported by buses and 3.7 percent - by cars.

Some 108.3 million people were transported by the subway, which is 3.9 percent more compared to January-June 2013.

Some 784,700 passengers were transported by aircraft, which is 5.1 percent more than in the same period of 2013. Around 0.2 percent of transportation by this type of transport fell to the private sector.
