Uzbek light industry's output is planned to be tripled by 2020, according to stats from the state-run joint-stock company 'Uzbeklegprom'.

In particular, the production of cotton yarn is planned to be increased by 2.5 times, the production of finished products of high added value, including apparels - 3.2 times, knitted goods - 2.1 times, and raw silk production - 2 1 times.

Fabric production is planned to be increased in 2020 by 5.4 times - up to 459.2 million square meters, including cotton fabrics - 2.8 times, silk fabrics - 2.7 times, nonwoven fabric - 1.5 times, knitted fabric - 2.7 times.

The light industry's share in the GDP in the first half of 2014 was 2.7 percent, in the industrial production - over 26 percent, and in the production of non-food consumer goods - over 44 percent.

The domestic processing of cotton fiber, from the total cotton production, was increased from 7 percent in 1991 to 44 percent in 2014.

The production capacity in spinning today stands at 450,000 tons, in weaving - 160 million meters, in knitted fabric production - 60,000 tons, in sewing and knitting - 180.3 million units.

In the last two years, the country commissioned 35 industrial enterprises worth $330.4 million. Their export potential is $215.8 million.

The largest of these enterprises is the Daewoo Bukharateks worth $52.3 million. Its capacity makes it possible to produce 16,000 tons of cotton yarn annually. The other largest enterprises are the Indorama Kokand Textile costing $55 million, having a production capacity of 15,000 tons of yarn per year, and Rieter Uzbekistan which produces tape, carding, and ring spinning machines.

On the eve of Uzbekistan's 23rd anniversary of independence it is expected to commission 22 new industrial enterprises, worth a total of $73 million and having an export potential of $73 million.

The exports are projected to stand at $1 billion by late 2014.

According to official stats, in 2013 the production of cotton yarn in Uzbekistan grew by 17.4 percent up to 171,348 tons, cotton fabrics - by 37.7 percent to 77.730 million square meters.
