Iranian Railways has adopted policies to accelerate the construction of the Mianeh-Tabriz railway in northwestern Iran, which is aimed to connect the country to Europe.

Mohsen Pourseyed Aqaei, managing director of Iranian Railway Company, said as the company is facing a budget deficit, it has prioritized the construction of railways which are of strategic importance, Iran's ISNA news agency reported on August 29.

Ali Nourzad, Iranian Deputy Transport Minister, said on June 21 that because the rail route will be connected to Azerbaijan and Turkey railways, it is of high importance for transporting goods and passengers to Central Asia and Europe and vice versa.

Iranian Transport and Urban Development Minister Abbas Akhoundi said on May 16 that an investor for the 200-kilometer railway will be introduced in the near future.

The route will include 9 stations, 7 tunnels, and 21 bridges. The railway is projected to carry 3 million tons of cargo and 4.5 million passengers per year.
