Iran will turn gas-fired power plants into combined-cycle power plants to save fuel.
Houshang Falahatian, the Iranian deputy energy minister, said no new gas-fired power plant will be constructed, Iran's Fars news agency reported on September 2.
The existing gas-fired power plants will be gradually changed to combined-cycle power plants, he noted.
Iran's Shana news agency reported on August 5 that the country's power plants consumed 5.2 billion liters of fuel (gas oil and mazut) in the first 135 days of the current Iranian year, which began on March 21.
Fuel consumption decreased by 3 billion liters compared to the same period in the previous year, the report added.
Iranian Energy Ministry official Abdorrasoul Pishahang said on August 19 that Iran plans to stop the operation of its worn out power plants and increase the efficiency of power generation.
Gas-fired power plants will be turned into combined cycle plants and their efficiency will be increased from 38 percent to 45 percent by 2025, Iran's Mehr news agency reported.
Some of the power plants in the country have been operating for more than 50 years, he added.
Power generation capacity in Iran has grown by 7 percent annually during the past 10 years. Iran is currently the biggest electricity producer in the Middle East.
Iran's total electricity generation currently stands at 70 gigawatts.
