By Elena Kosolapova - Trend:
Tajikistan increased electricity export by almost 40 percent in January-August 2014 compared to the same period of 2013, Asia-Plus news agency reported with the reference to Tajik Statistics Agency.

Revenue from electricity exports increased more than 30 percent in this period.

Tajikistan, exported 946 million kilowatt-hours of electricity worth about $31 million in the first eight months of 2014 compared to 682 million kilowatt-hours worth $23.5 million in the same period of 2014.

Tajikistan exports its electricity mainly to Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan. Its daily electricity supplies to Afghanistan reach 5.5 million kwh, and up to 1.5 million kwh per day goes to Kyrgyzstan. Afghanistan pays 3.7 cents for every kilowatt, while the price for Kyrgyzstan is fixed at 2 cents.

"It is better to sell something at such price than not sell at all, - Tajik Energy and Water Resources Minister Usmonali Usmonzoda explained the relatively low electricity price for Kyrgyzstan earlier. We will receive at least some money, selling electricity at a low price."

In summer Tajikistan has a large amount of surplus electricity, but there is no market for these products. Annual idle water discharge at Tajikistan's dams reaches 3 billion kwh, according to the minister.

Tajikistan is expected to export 1.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity by the end of 2014, including 800 million kwh to Afghanistan and 600 million kwh to Kyrgyzstan.

In 2013 Tajikistan exported abroad 968 million kwh of electricity worth $33 million (43 percent increase in volume and 56 percent increase in terms of money compared to 2012).
