The Contract of the Century signed in 1994 was a turning point in the history of Azerbaijan, according to Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg's letter.

The letter was read out by Norwegian ambassador to Azerbaijan Bård Ivar Svendsen at the 20th anniversary of the Contract of the Century and the Southern Gas Corridor groundbreaking ceremony in Baku on September 20.

"By inviting international companies and investors to take part in the development of ACG oil fields and opening up for export of oil to international markets, Azerbaijan took an important step for the prosperity of the country and for its integration for international markets," he said.

"1994 also marked the starting point for the commercial activities in Azerbaijan of the Norwegian oil company Statoil and several specialized service companies," he said.
"Today 20 years later Norway and Azerbaijan have become close partners in the field of energy. This is beneficial to both Norway and Azerbaijan and to the companies of our two countries. I hope to see our relationship continue its development in the future."
"As the first part of Southern Gas Corridor is welded in place the new chapter begins in the relationship between Azerbaijan and its partners," he said.

"Energy and security go hand in hand. Norway supports Southern Gas Corridor and the energy security it would bring to the countries along its path and for the consumers in EU. Norway and Azerbaijan are partners in securing large and stable energy supplies to Europe. And we will remain so for a long time to come."

The 20th anniversary of the Contract of the Century and the Southern Gas Corridor groundbreaking ceremony was held in Baku on September 20.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, as well as heads of several countries and governments, officials, foreign diplomats accredited in the country and foreign guests attended the ceremony.
