National PC project open for cooperation: Azerbaijani IT Ministry

The National PC project, which is aimed at providing the poor with computers by providing long-term credit at low interest rates, is open for cooperation with all interested companies, the Communications and IT Ministry said.

"The Microsoft and HP companies are involved in the project. The Intel will join the project at the second stage. There are not restrictions for interested companies to participate in the project," the Ministry said.

The National PC project is being implemented as a pilot, which will last until autumn. Computers, which were proposed at this stage, are only for teachers. The project will cover other social groups (students, doctors, civil servants, etc.).

The main objective of the project is to create conditions for different social strata of the population to acquire modern computers and software, reducing the "digital divide" by expanding the adoption of ICT in the regions, as well as support to the Azerbaijani Government, which is aimed at developing information society and e-government

HP will allocate 5,000 MiniNote, Laptop and Desktop. The equipment is licensed by Microsoft. The project is being implementing on the basis of agreement which was signed by the IT Ministry and the Microsoft. The equipment will be provided interest-free loan for 12 months period. The cost of computers is less than that of market prices by 25-40 percent. Teachers will be provided e-books by the IT Ministry, as well as100-hour Internet-cards, which was provided by Aztelecom and the Baku Telephone Communication.

100,000 PCs will be sold within three years.
