Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 23 / Trend H. Valiyev /

The Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Information Technologies (IIT) is studying the scientific and theoretical foundations of using broadly GIS in the country.

IIT is working to identify new methods to use GIS. The project is also developing an e-map of Azerbaijan and has integrated an Atlas-3000 modern mobile radio monitoring station.

IIT Director Rasim Aliguliev said GIS is used at the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences, Land and Cartography Committee, Communications and IT Ministry, Environment and Natural Resources Ministry and other state departments.

With the increased number of radio and television stations in Azerbaijan, classical methods of detecting their frequencies are becoming futile. New algorithms must be developed using more efficient methods such as GIS. Today, GIS technologies are used to detect local stations and the stations of neighboring countries.

Using GIS in Azerbaijan is considered a priority for building an information-based society.
