Azerbaijan’s National Center for Nuclear Research CJSC will submit a final report to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) until late January 2017 regarding obtaining licenses for the purchase and maintenance of the isotopes needed to launch the sterilization unit, the nuclear research center told Trend.

Three licenses are needed to use the isotopes. The first license for their purchase and maintenance has already been obtained, and it is planned to obtain the other two licenses for the import and transportation of the isotopes until the end of January 2017.

During this period, the nuclear research center will have to submit a report to the IAEA to obtain the licenses and indicate in this report the place where the isotopes will be purchased, and after that, the isotopes will be produced and transported to Azerbaijan within the subsequent three months.

The work on the construction of the sterilization unit has been carried out by the Institute of Isotopes of Hungary. This institute carried out the final test work on commissioning of the sterilization unit.

Sterilization unit will be located in Azerbaijan’s settlement of Qobu (20 km away from Baku) on a plot owned by the National Center for Nuclear Research CJSC.

Sterilization unit makes it possible to apply the method of gamma radiation to kill microbes, which in turn increases the shelf life of agricultural products (grains, meat, dried fruit, potatoes, etc.), medicines.
