AZERBAIJAN READY TO CONSIDER APPEALS FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF 3RD MOBILE OPERATOR

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies has got defined with the perspectives of admitting the third mobile operator to the country. From 2006 the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies will set up considering the appeals for organizing new mobile communications, the Ministry told Trend.

"The key terms for potential operators will be the development of regional telecommunications network, the attraction of big investments, expansion of mobile network, and perhaps, internet-network," the Ministry announced.

For this end the Ministry is considering the prospects for expansion of broadcasting frequencies with the use of advanced technologies. At present there are 1.8 million mobile subscribers in the country and they are more than the stationary communications subscribers. The market has been formed by companies Bakcell, which was founded in 1994, and Azercell, which was founded in 1996 and can be privatized by 2006 after the purchase of state share.

It comes as the term of liberalization of the market. Mobile solutions are offered by CATEL company, while are annulled by the Communications Ministry. Russian operators (MTS, Be-line), as well as European and Asian companies, voiced their will on opening of mobile daughter companies in Azerbaijan. Tariffs offered by the local operators range from $0.1 to $0.25 with free ingoing calls.
