Uzbek PM fights swine flu

Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyayev asked the relevant ministries and state agencies to up measures to prevent the swine flu from entering the country, the Cabinet of Ministers' Press Service reported today.

The minister held an extraordinary meeting with the Republican Emergency Anti-Epidemic Commission regarding the epidemiological situation in neighboring countries.

He instructed the state organs to provide medical facilities with additional diagnostic equipment, demanded the use of protective masks in public service organizations and also increased prophylactic measures at children's and educational institutions.

The Uzbek Health Ministry's Virology Research Institute established the virology laboratory equipped with diagnostic equipment to identify the A/H1N1 virus. In addition, five regional virology laboratories were opened in the regions. All regional hospitals were supplied with the necessary facilities to treat SARS, including Tamiflu.

State agencies also organized medical and sanitary surveillance points equipped with medicine and medical equipment at all the country's international airports. Doctors examine passengers as well as imported food and goods, and provide medical assistance when necessity.

Uzbekistan has not reported any cases of the swine flu, the ministry reported.
