Review of transport sector in Azerbaijan (January 2014)

The Azerbaijani transport sector transported 16.5 million tons of cargo in January 2014 compared to 16.4 million tons in the same period of 2013.

Around 75 percent of the total volume of goods transported in Janaury fell to the private sector, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said.

Some 53.7 percent of all cargo were transported by vehicles, 32.8 percent - by pipelines, 8.3 percent - by railway and 5.2 percent - by ships.

Some 132.2 million people used passenger transport in January, which is 6.2 percent more than in the same period of 2013. Most of the passengers were transported by vehicles (86.7 percent) and metro (13.1 percent).

Automobile transport takes the lion share in the transport field of the country. Some 8.8 million tons of cargo were transported by vehicles, which is 5.7 percent more than in January 2013. The volume of passenger traffic exceeded 114.6 million people (a 7 percent growth). Some 96.6 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 3.4 percent - by cars.

Freight turnover by vehicles increased by 5.8 percent during the reporting period, while passenger turnover - by 7.7 percent.

Some 1.4 million tons of cargo were transported by rail in January compared to 1.9 million tons in the same period of 2013.

The number of loaded carriages made up 483, in average per day and unloaded - 462. Average daily load of carriages in the northern direction is 19,800 tons and in western direction 4,400 tons and southern direction - 3,700 tons.

Around 0.9 million tons of cargo were transported by ships compared to 1.1 million tons in January 2013. All cargo accounted for international operations. The volume of goods handled in Azerbaijani ports in January 2014 amounted to 1.2 million tons.

Some 56.5 percent of cargo shipping fell to oil and oil products, while 43.4 percent on dry cargo. The volume of international transit cargo handled in the ports hit 81.9 percent. As of February 1, 2014, around 9,000 tons of cargo left in the ports for import or 63.6 percent less than in 2013.

Some 3.7 million tons of oil were transported via oil pipelines in January 2014. During this period, 75 percent or 2.9 million tons of oil were transported via the BTC (data provided by the State Statistics Committee). Sangachal terminal transported 488,300 tons of Turkmen oil via BTC in January.

Gas transportation via gas pipelines made up 2.3 billion cubic meters (a 16.4 percent increase) in January. Some 27.5 percent of the transported gas fell to the South Caucasus Pipeline. Some 0.7 billion cubic meters of gas were transported via this pipeline.

Some 125,000 passengers were transported by air transport in January which is 5.8 percent more than in the same month of 2013. Some 0.2 percent of shipment by this kind of transport fell to private sector. The volume of cargo transportation by air hit 10,000 tons increasing by 29.9 percent.

Some 17.3 million people were transported by metro (a 1.5 percent growth) compared to January 2013.

Some 59 million tons of cargo were transported through the Eurasian transport corridor through the territory of Azerbaijan in 2013, which is 3.8 percent more than in 2012, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said.

Around 46.5 percent of the total volume of transported cargo fell to vehicles, 36.2 percent - railway and 17.3 percent - ships.

Some 285.2 million people were transported through the corridor in 2013, which is 9.3 percent more than in 2012.

A brief overview of events in the transport sector in January 2014:

- In January 2014 the freight transportation tariffs in Azerbaijan's transport sector remained unchanged with respect to the figures for December 2013, according to a message from Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee. The committee said the passenger transportation tariffs fell by 1.2 percent in January.

- Baku Metro is completing preparation work for starting the construction of "В-04" station on Jalil Mammadguluzadeh street (near the Heydar Aliyev Sports Complex), "В-5" station (near Fizuli Street), stations on Jeyhun Salimov Street, Avtovagzal and Memar Ajami-2 stations. All five stations will be a part of the new Purple Line.

- The Nakhchivan Automobile Plant and Chinese Lifan company have signed a new contract that will enable the Azerbaijani side to sell the products to third countries and in particular Georgia and Central Asian countries.

- Plastic public transport cards are now being sold in Azerbaijan.

- Azerbaijan will move to Euro-4 ecological standards for vehicles bypassing Euro-3 standards, Director of Standardization and Certification Institute of State Committee for Standardization, Metrology and Patents, Sabig Abdullayev said. The application of the standard will begin April 1, 2014, according to Abdullayev.

- The Azerbaijani Transport Ministry commissioned the Agstafa-Poylu-Georgian border highway. The total length of the highway is 59 kilometres.

- Azerbaijani Airlines CJSC introduced fuel surcharges in its own flights from Jan.15, 2014, the CJSC said. Fuel surcharges for economy class in flights lasting less than two hours, amount to 12 euros and for business class it is18 euros, the CJSC said. The fuel surcharges in the flights lasting more than two hours, are equal to 18 and 27 euros respectively. The introduction of fuel surcharges has accordingly affected the minimal airfare.

- Azerbaijani Railways JSC has received all 76 passenger wagons sent for overhaul to Ukraine and Russia. The wagons will be operated on the Baku-Tbilisi and Baku-Moscow routes.
