Eurasian market more important than Customs union: European expert

Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov. 26 / Trend V. Zhavoronkova /

The market of Asia and Europe for Kazakhstan, Russia and Belorussia will be more interesting in future than the market inside a new customs union, European expert on energy in Central Asia, Stefan Meister, said.

"The most attractive market for all participants-countries of a new organization in future is not in this customs union but in EU and Asia," German council on foreign policy expert Meister told Trend via E-mail from Berlin.

The presidents of Customs Union's participants-countries, namely Kazakhstan, Russia and Belorussia will sign several agreements in Minsk on Nov. 27. They will allow launching the work from January 1, 2010.

They will be signed at the meeting of the state council of Eurasian Economic Community. The union will be established within it during the meeting of customs union countries heads.

"I am not sure that they (Russia, Kazakhstan and Belorussia) are ready indeed and wish to cooperate within the Customs union," Meister said.

He said that they have special agreements in several spheres. It will be easy for them to remain in the union.

Such countries as Belorussia and Kazakhstan are not interested in loss of customs fees in several spheres despite Russia is important trade partner for these countries, expert said.

Meister said that it would be more interesting for these countries to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the long-term prospect.

"Despite joining WTO is not useful for non-competitive spheres of economy in these three countries, it will promote modernization of economic and financial systems in these countries," Meister said.
