Azerbaijani specialists attend Waste & Climate Conference in Copenhagen

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 21 / Trend /

A UN conference on climate change was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Dec. 7-18 with the participation of representatives from 192 countries worldwide.

The event attracted the attention of governments' heads to developing an international agreement in 2012-2020 in an effort to reduce emission of greenhouse gas into the environment. This document will replace Kyoto protocol, adopted in 1997 by UN.

At the same time, a conference titled "Waste and Climate", dedicated to managing solid waste and their impact on climate change was held. Representatives of Azerbaijan's Tamiz Shahar company attended this conference, which was held on Dec. 3-4 in Copenhagen.

Azerbaijani delegates acquainted the participants with work done in the management of solid waste in Azerbaijan, as well as future plans. They noted that this area is given special attention in Azerbaijan as in many other countries. It was emphasized that as a result of implementing the goals, waste management system in Azerbaijan will be improved in accordance with international standards. It will decrease negative impacts on the environment and human health.

With a view to neutralize waste in the capital and surrounding villages a plant for incinerating solid waste ("From waste to energy") is being constructed in Baku. The French company CNIM SA, carrying out design, construction and exploration of the plant in Baku, is a leading company worldwide in the field of environment, energy production and mechanical engineering.

It is planned to develop a feasibility study within the project "Unified management of solid waste" funded by the World Bank to establish transhipment stations and sorting places.
