Georgian Railway reduces transportation

Georgia, Tbilisi, Jan. 27 / Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /

The Georgian Railway reduced transportation by 19 percent to 17.1 million tons last year compared to 2008. According to the company, liquid cargo transportation - most of which fell to oil and petroleum products - amounted to 9.7 million tons (down 3 percent). The volume of passenger transport decreased by 9 percent to 3.1 million people.

Georgian Railway connects the decline in passenger and cargo transportation with the global financial crisis and political instability in the country in early 2009.

The company invested about 100 million lari (1.74 lari is $1) to repair track and rolling stock.

The operation length of Georgia's railways is 1,324 kilometers. The system has 45 tunnels, 1,714 bridges and ferry crossings with Russia and Ukraine.
