German automotive group Daimler AG said Monday it had signed up a factory inside Iraq to assemble its trucks, DPA reported.
Daimler will supply tools and equipment for truck assembly and provide technical support on the site operated by Iraq's State Company for Automotive Industry (SCAI), the group said in Stuttgart.
The agreement with SCAI, based on a July 2008 accord with the Iraqi government, was signed in the German embassy in Baghdad on Sunday. The company is to export both assembly kits to be put together at the factory and complete Mercedes-Benz trucks.
In February 2009, Daimler opened a representative office in Baghdad as a first step in returning to the Iraqi market. A Daimler spokeswoman in Stuttgart declined to disclose any further details.
