Toyota files for recall of Prius, three other models

Toyota Motor Corp filed Tuesday for a recall of its 2010 Prius hybrid car and three other models over a faulty anti-lock braking system, the latest in a series of recalls threatening the reputation of the world's largest carmaker, DPA reported.

"Let me assure everyone that we will redouble our commitment to quality as the lifeline of our company," Toyota chief executive Akio Toyoda said at a press conference.

The filing with the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry came after the latest model of the Prius, released in May, became a top-selling model in Japan on the back of government incentives for fuel-efficient cars.

The world's largest automaker is also to recall three other models, including the Lexus HS250h sedan and the hybrid-only Sai compact sedan, which employ a similar braking system as the Prius.

The recall would fix software that has been blamed for temporary brake failures when the Prius is driven over uneven ground. The automaker was also to file for a recall in the United States, which is to be followed in other countries where the Prius is sold, Kyodo News said.

Toyota sold 170,000 units of its 2010 Prius in Japan and 100,000 units in the United States.

It comes on the back of a recall of 8 million other Toyota cars for accelerator problems and as Toyota struggles to retain its global image for producing high-quality, reliable cars.
