The installation of water meters in apartments throughout Azerbaijan will be completed in 2011, Azersu Deputy Chairman Mahir Mammadov said at a press conference.

He said so far the meters have been installed in the apartments of 90 percent of the population.
"Some have become obsolete and require replacement," Mammadov said.

He said the enterprise's aim is to bring the water payment collection level to 100 percent, as this is Azersu's main income.

President Ilham Aliyev signed an order on April 8 to write off the population's debts for water supply and sewerage services.

Based on the order, the population's debts to Azersu amounting to 294.2 million manat as of Feb. 1 will be written off.

Azersu was instructed to send each consumer a notification of the written-off amount within 10 days and a notice of the accumulated debt since Feb. 1.

Mammadov said 85 percent of the population had debts before Feb. 1.

Today, work is underway to determine the debts that accumulated after Feb. 1.
Azersu plans to complete this work within a month, he said.

The official exchange rate is 0.7923 manat to $1 on April 11.
