Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) will carry out a complete reconstruction of the Heydar Aliyev International Airport as part of its hosting the Eurovision-2012 Song Contest in Azerbaijan, AZAL Deputy President Sabir Ilyasov said.

Reconstruction work will be conducted adjacent to the construction of a new terminal complex. Although reconstruction was previously expected to take place after the building of new complex, plans have recently changed.

Reconstruction work will cover the airport building, cargo and baggage compartments, as well as the surrounding area, intending to ensure first-rate service to foreign guests.

Upon completion of construction of the new airport complex in 2013 the existing complex will be used for domestic flights.

The new airport terminal, with a complex area of 58,000 square meters, will serve 3 million passengers. The four-story building will be built in the shape of a triangle.

The new terminal will have 18 escalators and 20 elevators and will house the latest technological advances used in international aviation. Passenger services will be organized at the highest international standards, applying the most advanced equipment to ensure maximum safety demands. The new complex will be able to receive eight aircrafts simultaneously.

The runway at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport will be 4,000 meters long and 75 meters wide.
