Kazakhstan has started barley exports to Iran, but wheat exports are not expected, Kazakh Agriculture Minister Asylzhan Mamytbekov wrote on his Twitter page today.

"Kazakh wheat is not being exported via Aktau because of import tariffs on wheat set by Iran. Export of barley has already started," Novosti-Kazakhstan quoted Mamytbekov as saying.

In 2010 Iranian authorities imposed a ban on import of 20 kinds of foodstuffs, including wheat and rice. Iranian Ministry of Trade announced that the measure was taken for the purpose of protecting local commodity producers.

The ban was set for an indefinite period.
