Switzerland has rendered Georgia assistance in carrying out large rail and highway projects, the Regional Development and Infrastructure Ministry reported following the visit of head of agency Ramaz Nikolaishvili to Geneva.

Mr Nikolaishvili said Switzerland took particular interest in the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project, which is now underway.

"Switzerland which intends to assist us to construct tunnels will study a number of opportunities in this direction," Mr Nikolaishvili noted.

During his visit Mr Nikolaishvili held a meeting with Secretary General of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) Martin Marmi who stressed that the construction and revamping of Georgian highways will be of interest to international shipping companies that use this transport corridor.

Also a readiness was expressed to render assistance to Georgia to introduce a modern electronic system to facilitate trade.

The Georgian Regional Development and Infrastructure agency and head of the local traffic department discussed various innovations in road infrastructure and security, as well as up-to-date technology of bridge and tunnel construction.

During the talks a decision was taken to prepare a memorandum between the highway agencies of the two countries on the basis of which Georgian specialists will be training in Switzerland.
