The Nakhchivan automobile plant (NAP) has launched production of Lifan off-road vehicles, NAP director Musa Abdullayev told Trend on Friday. The plant currently plans to assemble 1000 cars meeting euro-3 standards.

"The cost of the new cars is supposed to be 14,000-15,000 manat and the engine capacity 1800 cubic centimetres," Mr Abdullayev said.

He also said that for the first time the plant has started to assemble Lifan 620 engines and 320 cars with an automatic gearbox.

He noted how successful the introduction of NAP cars as taxis have been in the Nakhcivan Autonomous Republic and the country's other regions. The construction of the Nakhchivan automobile plant was launched in 2008 and commissioned on Jan. 11, 2011.

A contract was signed at the Azerbaijani-Chinese Business Forum between the Nakhchivan automobile plant and Chongqing Lifan Industry automotive corporation in Beijing in May 2009. This contract led to the assembly of Lifan passenger cars in Nakhchivan.

The plant uses the latest equipment made in Germany, Belgium and Italy. The total plant area is 2.6 hectares and capacity is 5000 cars per year.
