Turkmenistan, Russia discuss prospects for cooperation

There was a telephone conversation between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev at the initiative of the Turkmen side, the Turkmen government said on Saturday.

The two sides exchanged views on the status and prospects of Turkmen-Russian relations, which has a high level of trust and mutual respect.

"Russia - a great state that Turkmenistan is considered as a strategic partner in the implementation of important projects of national and international importance," the Turkmen leader said, confirming the country's interest in diversification of mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly its economic component.

The President of Turkmenistan and the Prime Minister of Russia noted "the need for early implementation of bilateral arrangements, reached at the highest and government level to bring Turkmen-Russian cooperation to a new level."

The information also indicates that Berdymuhamedov congratulated the head of the Russian government on his birthday and wish him good health, happiness and success in his work.

"Dmitry Medvedev noted with satisfaction that the traditionally friendly intergovernmental dialogue based on a strong foundation of good neighborliness and fruitful cooperation has received rapid development across the range of areas in recent years," the information says.

According to the Russian side, the trade turnover between Russia and Turkmenistan is steadily growing, and reached $4.3 billion taking into account the supply of gas in 2011. Russia ranks third in overall turnover of Turkmenistan for three months in 2012. The turnover amounted to $235.41 million.

Russia and Turkmenistan are the major exporters of natural gas in the CIS. The strategic direction in the relationship between the two countries is with cooperation in the field of fuel and energy. Turkmenistan's gas comes to Russia by the Middle Asia - Centre (CAC) pipeline through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Customer - JSC Gazprom (Russia) signed an agreement with Turkmenistan on gas supplies for 25 years in 2003.

Russian companies Itera and Zarubezhneft work on one of the blocks in the Caspian Sea under PSA agreement. Turkmenistan in recent years has stepped up direct cooperation with the regions of Russia - St. Petersburg, Tatarstan, Astrakhan and others.

There are about 180 joint ventures in Turkmenistan.
