Turkish PM: Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is nearing completion

Railway project Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is in the last stage of implementation, and it will be commissioned by 2013, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during the Turkish-Kazakh business forum, TRT Haber reported on Friday.

He noted that the route of the Silk Road will be restored after commissioning of Marmara in October 2013, which is intended to connect the European part of Turkey with Anatolian, and accession of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway to it.

It is planned to construct a new 105-kilometer branch railroad in the frame of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project. In addition, the section of the railway Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Marabda will be reconstructed in Georgia, which will increase its capacity to 15 million tons of cargo per year. It is planned to build a place in Akhalkalaki for the transition of trains from the existing train tracks in Georgia to the European one.

Peak capacity of the corridor will be 17 million tons of cargo. This figure will be at the level of one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo at the initial stage.
