The State National Service Turkmenistan Airlines (Turkmenistan Hava Yolları) has entrusted the building of an international airport with a capacity of 1600 passengers per hour in Ashgabat by August 2016 to the Turkish company Polimeks, the official Turkmen source said.

Implementation of the project worth about $2.2 billion will start in January 2013.

Results of an international tender were announced at the recent expanded meeting of the Turkmen Cabinet of Ministers. To date Polimeks completed about 120 construction projects in Turkmenistan, including an airport in the Caspian city of Turkmenbashi.

Last September it was reported that German Airport Consulting Partners / ILF Consulting Engineers, which was the winner of the international tender will operate as a consulting company controlling construction of new international airports in Turkmenistan.

Around six months ago a Turkmen delegation was on a business trip in Munich (Germany) to study issues related to the construction and maintenance of major international airports.

German EWC Hoshtief, French Bouygues and VINCI Construction companies initially participated in the international tender for the capital's airport construction.
