WB recommends Azerbaijan to develop strategy for tax preferences

Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 8 / Trend A. Akhundov /

The World Bank (WB) recommends Azerbaijan to develop a strategy for benefits and preferences, as well as tax exemptions, WB country manager Larisa Leshchenko said at the forum 'Azerbaijani tax system: realities and prospects', on Friday.

"At some point tax benefits and exemptions are necessary, but they cannot always be given," she said. "We must gradually move away from them."

Chairman of the Azerbaijani parliamentary committee on economic policy Ziyad Samadzade said that at present one of components of the country's economic policy is to deliver these benefits, but over time their scope will be narrowed.

"Today, we are creating free economic zones and technology parks," he said. "For example, agriculture has been exempt from virtually all taxes, but eventually when the agricultural sector is strengthened we will eliminate these exemptions. Today, these benefits are necessary."
