Qatari banks step up activity in Turkish banking sector

Qatari Doha Bank plans to open a branch in Turkey, Anadolu agency reported on Monday.

Doha Bank, which already has a representative office in Turkey, plans to open a branch through the purchase of an existing bank in Turkey, or the acquisition of shares of a Turkish bank.

In addition, Qatar's largest bank, the Commercial Bank of Qatar is also in talks with the Turkish Alternatif Bank for the purchase of its shares.

Turkish private Alternatif Bank was established in 1991. The total assets of the bank amount to 1.8 billion lira. The Bank has 30 branches in Turkey.

According to the results of 2012, the number of banks in Turkey has increased to 49 against 46 in 2011. Of the total number of banks, 36 are commercial banks and 13 - investment banks.
Three of 36 commercial banks are state-owned, 12 banks - private with 100-percent Turkish capital, and 16 banks are established the participation of foreign capital.
