Azerbaijan, Baku, April 30 / Trend E. Ismailov /

During the last 20 years, the housing stock of Azerbaijan increased by 30 percent, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Azerbaijan Sevinj Hasanova said during the conference 'New relations in the housing sector' on Tuesday.

According to her, the population's real incomes increased three times during the recent years. The income growth, in turn, requires improvement of services, including housing and utilities. Azerbaijan completely meets its own electric power demands; in particular, the population of the country is provided with uninterrupted power supply, the gas and drinking water supply level is increasing.

"With the growth of the population's incomes during the last 20 years, the country's Housing stock grew by 30 percent, which is a serious indicator," the deputy minister said.

According to her, despite the fact that the country has taken a number of measures to improve public services, including the Housing Code adopted in October 2009, there are still some problems in this field.

"Besides the achievements in the sphere of communal services, there are still unresolved issues, in particular those related to self-administration. Over 80 per cent of the housing stock has been privatized since 1980," he said.

According to Hasanova, there is still insufficient understanding of the owners of their powers under the privatization, in particular in the area of self-administration. In this regard, the Ministry of Economic Development is conducting a series of activities in the cities and regions of the country to educate the owners. But despite this, the processes of self-administration are better organized in new buildings, and the worst situation is observed in old buildings, built during the Soviet era.
