Azerbaijan’s transport sector increases volume of cargo transportation in first six months of 2013

Around 105.9 million tons of cargo were transported by Azerbaijan's transport sector in January-June, 2013, which is by 2.4 percent more than the same period of 2012, the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan told Trend on Monday.

As the State Statistics Committee said, about 74.4 percent of the total volume of cargo transported in the first six months of 2013 fell to the private sector. About 56.3 percent of the whole cargo was transported by the automobile, 27.4 percent by pipelines, 10.6 percent - by railway and 5.7 percent - by sea.

Around 820.2 million of people were transported by passenger transport in January-June, which is by 7.7 percent more than in January-June, 2012. A significant part of the passengers were transported by automobiles (87.1 percent) and by underground (12.7 percent).

About 11.2 million tons of cargo were transported by railway in January-June, 2013, which is by 0.7 percent more than the same period of 2012.

About 6 million tons of cargo was transported by sea transport, compared to 6.5 million tons in January-June, 2012. The whole volume of the transported cargo fell to international operations. The volume of cargo processed in Azerbaijani ports in January-June, amounted to 6.2 million tons.

Around 59.7 million tons of cargo were transported by automobile transport, which is by 6.8 percent more than in January-June, 2012. The volume of passenger transporting amounted to 714 million people (8.3 percent increase). About 96.3 percent of passengers were transported by buses and 3.7 percent - by cars.

The volume of passenger transporting by underground amounted to 104.2 million people, increasing by 4.4 percent compared to the same period of 2012.

Around 746.5 thousand of passengers were transported by air, which is by 8.7 percent more than in January-June, 2012. About 0.8 percent of transporting by this kind of transport fell to the private sector.

Around 24.3 million tons of cargo was transported through the Eurasian transport corridor, by crossing the territory of Azerbaijan in January-may, which is by 4 percent more than in January-May, 2012. About 115.7 million people were transported through the Eurasian corridor, which is by 7.3 percent more than in January-May, 2012.
