Transport Ministry: Construction of new seaport in Azerbaijan carried out quickly

The Ministry of Transport of Azerbaijan intends to transfer the ferry terminal from the centre of Baku to the new international sea trade port which is being built in Alat (65 km from Baku), Deputy Transport Minister of Azerbaijan Musa Panahov told journalists on Tuesday.

According to him, the construction of the new port, which will consist of three phases, is being carried out according to schedule. At the moment, active work is being carried out at the ferry terminal, which will be moved from the centre of Baku.

"We will ensure the transfer of the ferry terminal by late 2013, and the following phase envisages the transfer of the terminal for unloading dry-cargo ships [to a new port]," the Deputy Minister said.

Earlier, Azerbaijani Minister of Transport Ziya Mammadov said that, the ferry terminal and the whole road system of the new sea port will be commissioned in 2014.

The construction of the dry-cargo terminal will be completed in the new port in 2015.

The construction of the new international port began in Azerbaijan in November 2010.

Construction of the new international sea port in Alat settlement is carried out in three stages. The first stage envisages the construction of two ferry and three cargo berths for receiving containers, ro-ro type ships and simple (universal) dry-cargo ships. The second stage of the project includes the construction of three more cargo berths, the third - the construction of an additional two cargo berths. The port will be able to receive up to 11.6 million tons of cargo a year.
