It is necessary to increase the capacity of the Georgian Railway several times, the Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili said on Monday at the presentation of the Co-investment Fund.
"The volume of petroleum products, transported by Georgian Railways since 2006, decreases every year by one million tons. This year, we will increase and double this figure, and next year it will be five million tonnes. Then we will continue to increase this figure, and we will be able to increase the transportation of petroleum products to 16 million tons. We should increase the overall capacity of the railway to 100 million tons. We have such an opportunity. This issue is being discussed, and we are working on it," Ivanishvili said.
According to him, bypass railway in Tbilisi, which had been previously planned to be built by the government, was reducing the capacity of the railway by 25 percent.
"This was absolutely not calculated. Tunnels were built, but they were one-sided, no two-way traffic was envisaged in those tunnels and this created confusion. We will bring these projects to the economic mind and continue normal projects so that the capacity of the railways increased several times as we need to maximally use our transit function and the economy of Georgia should receive the maximum benefit from it," Ivanishvili said.
