Around 70 per cent of Iranian women are employed in the agriculture and service sectors, ISNA reported.

Some 49.8 per cent of them are working in the service sector and 25 per cent in the agriculture sector.

Of the total employed population, 46 per cent is working in the service sector, 34 per cent in the industry sector and 20 per cent in agriculture.

The number of unemployed people in Iran has decreased by around 400,000 in the first half of the current Iranian calendar year which began on March 21, compared to the past six months.

Some 2.95 million were unemployed in the country at the end of the past Iranian calendar year, but the figure has decreased to 2.556 million, according to the Statistical Centre of Iran.

However, unemployment has increased among women and young people.

The unemployment rate was 21.2 per cent among women, showing a 2.4 per cent rise compared to the spring.

Moreover, 21.1 per cent of the 15-29 year olds were unemployed in the summer.

In August, the Mehr News Agency quoted Iranian Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Ali Tayyebnia as saying the country will face a population of around 8.5 million jobless in the near future.

For the time being, some 3.5 people are jobless in the country, he said, adding that the figure will soar to 8.5 million because a large number of educated youth will have graduated from universities soon and will seek jobs.

Previously, Tayyebnia said the low economic growth rate is currently the main challenge to the national economy.

Tayyebnia referred to high unemployment as another serious concern.

The ministry will focus on improving living standards through curbing inflation and flourishing business, he stated.
