Cargo transportation by ships via Caspian sea grows steadily, the chairman of Azerbaijan State Caspian Shipping Company, Rauf Veliyev said at the discussion panel during the third Caspian Forum in Istanbul on Dec. 5.

While in 1996 the volume of cargo transportation was 1.4 million tons, last year it exceeded 10.3 million tons, Veliyev noted.

"To increase the commercial opportunities of regional projects and the transit potential of the region, partnership between our company and the relevant structures of the countries involved in these projects, is important. The key to implementation of such projects is establishing a dialogue between the structures, coordinating steps and taking joint action on issues of tariffs, customs procedures, eliminating bureaucratic barriers. Effective use of the potential of the Eurasian transport corridor is one of the main strategies of the company," Veliyev said.

Veliyev went on to note that the company plans to improve the corporate governance, construct new vessels which will meet all standards and customers' requirements, carry out the certification of vessels in accordance with modern standards.
