Turkish company Norsel International Insaat Dis Tisaret Sanayi Limited has commissioned two cotton spinning factories in the cities of Seydi and Turkmenabat in the Lebap region of Turkmenistan. This will create more than 400 jobs, the Turkmen Ministry of Textile Industry reported on Feb. 20.
'After the new factories are commissioned, the production and export potential of the domestic textile industry will significantly increase', according to the statement.
The Turkmenabat plant is designed to process 4500 tons of cotton fibre and to produce 4000 tons of Open End cotton yarn. An enterprise in Seydi will annually process 6700 tons of cotton fibre and produce 6000 tons of cotton yarn.
Most of the enterprise's products are designed for export.
The production of cotton yarn increased by 17 times and cotton fabrics were eight-fold during the years of independence in Turkmenistan. Dozens of textile companies totalling more than $1.6 billion were built in the country during this period. This allowed increasing processing volumes of domestically produced cotton by 51 percent.
Turkmenistan traditionally grows cotton. This is the basis for the development of the textile industry with an annual turnover of $400 million.
As of 2013, the textile industry is represented by 74 enterprises in Turkmenistan, namely 32 textile complexes, cotton spinning and weaving factories, 17 garment factories, seven silk production enterprises and two wool processing enterprises.
Most of the textile products produced in Turkmenistan are exported to the US, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Turkey, China, Ukraine. Such companies as Puma, Bershka, Nautika, Sara Lee, Casual Wear, Wal-Mart, Miss Erica, Vespolino, JC Penney and others are among the customers of the finished goods.
