Iran will complete a North-South transit corridor by the end of the current solar year (March 2015).

The transit corridor will extend from Bandar Abbas port in south of the country to Astara port in the north, Iran's Fars news agency reported on April 22.

Kheirollah Khademi, an official at Iran's transport ministry, told Fars that just 10 kilometers of the Rasht-Astara route should be built in order to complete the transit corridor.

The transit corridor will connect the Persian Gulf littoral states to the Central Asia, he noted.

On April 12, Mohammad Javad Atrchian an official at the Iranian Roads Maintenance Organization said that over 12 million tons of goods were transited via Iran in the past Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20, 2014, a 4 percent rise year on year.

Some 96 percent of the goods were transited by roads, showing 8 percent rise compared to the year ended in March 2013, IRNA quoted Atrchian as saying.

The transited consignments mostly consisted of fuel, construction materials, cotton, home appliances, and vehicles, he noted.

Iran earns some 14 trillion rials (about $560 million) annually through transiting goods via ports.
