Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan discuss boosting rail cooperation

Baku, Azerbaijan, Apr.27
By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

A trilateral meeting among the heads of Iranian, Turkmen and Uzbek railway administrations was held in Iran's capital Tehran.

During the meeting, Iranian Railways Company's managing director Mohsen Pourseyed Aghaie said the volume of goods which is transited among the three countries is around 1.6 million tons per year, Iran's IRIB reported on April 27.

The figure is expected to rise to 3 million tons this year, he added.

Considering the rail connections between the three countries, and that they all use the International Railway Transit Tariff (MTT), each of the countries can reduce transit tariffs by a certain amount, he explained.

A project for linking the railways on the Kazakh-Turkmen border was launched in May 2013.

Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan have been implementing the 'North-South' project jointly with Iran since 2007.

Currently, work is underway to link the railways of Iran and Turkmenistan.

This regional project will open up a way for European and Asian countries to Central Asia and the Persian Gulf.

Aside from that the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway was launched last year. This railway can also be joined by China, Kyrgyzstan and Iran.

The Iranian, Turkmen and Uzbek railway heads agreed to reduce the costs for transporting cotton, wheat and chemical fertilizers by 25 percent.
