Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ordered to accelerate the domestic car production, Turkish newspaper Sabah reported on May 23.

"Some people doubt that Turkey should produce domestic cars," he added.

"One can confidently say that it is time for domestic car production," he said.

Erdogan stressed that Turkey must not only use the latest technologies, but also create them.

Earlier, Erdogan said that Ankara will accelerate domestic car production.

He stressed that Turkey produces drones, armored vehicles and the country's economy is able to produce a domestic car.

Turkey can prepare a package of measures stimulating the domestic car production.

Turkey ranks sixth in car production in Europe. Ford, FIAT, Renault, Toyota, Honda, Opel, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and MAN cars are manufactured or assembled in Turkey. Furthermore, buses of local brands such as Temsa and Otokar are also manufactured in the country.

The number of vehicles used in Turkey reached 17,653,281, according to the Turkish Statistics Institute.

The number of passenger cars is 51.4 percent of a total number of vehicles, trucks -16.4 percent, motorcycles -15.3 percent, tractors- 8.7 percent, buses -1.4 percent, vehicles for different purposes- 6.8 percent.
Some 41.5 percent of vehicles use liquefied gas in the country, 31.9 percent - petrol and 26.1 percent - diesel.
