Kazakhstan is close to signing an agreement to join the World Trade Organization (WTO), Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrisov said at a press conference on the signing of the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union on June 2.

"Kazakhstan and Belarus will continue striving to join the WTO," he said. "As for Kazakhstan, we are already close to signing an agreement with the WTO."

The minister stressed that the representatives of Kazakhstan in the area of trade, together with colleagues from Russia and the U.S. are planning to hold a meeting in Geneva. The discussions on Kazakhstan's accession to the WTO are expected to be completed there.

"I think that this meeting will be useful to better understand the specific conditions of Kazakhstan's accession to the WTO," he said. "We support contacts with the Russian government. We hope that this issue will be resolved soon."

"Kazakhstan will be glad to help Belarus to undergo this process," he stressed. "Eurasian Economic Union member-states' joining WTO is in the common interests of the two countries."
