The groundbreaking ceremony for the third airport have taken place in Istanbul, TRT Haber TV channel reported on June 7.

An agreement on construction of the third airport in Istanbul was signed in Turkey in May 2013.

The document was signed between the Ministry of Transport, Shipping and Communications of Turkey and the Limak-Kolin-Cengiz-MaPa-Kalyon Consortium, which won the tender.
The Limak-Kolin-Cengiz-MaPa-Kalyon consortium won the tender for the project on May 3, 2013, offering 22.1 billion Euros for the project.

Istanbul's third airport was under construction near Lake Terkos in the north of the city.

Earlier, the Air Transport Department of the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Shipping and Communications told Trend that construction of the third airport in Istanbul would cost ten billion lira.

The ministry also said the airport would be able to serve 90 million people a year initially. In future, this figure would increase to 150 million.

The official exchange rate on June 7 is 2.0897 TL/USD.
